I’ve got front control arms and rear sway bar end links on the way from FCPEuro. $100 each for the control arms, OE Lemforder. I’ll take that. I almost ordered sway bars from IPD but I’m not sure I’ll keep this car long enough to justify that. I’m considering replacing it with an 850 wagon, or a 240....or a W123 wagon if I can find a good one for a reasonable price. Or I’ll get something irresponsible and fun for the summer. Who knows. In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the turbocharged couch.

Nice! Curious though, why would you want an 850 wagon over a V70 wagon?

These don’t have a lot in common with the 240, which is why you should buy a 240. No obnoxious euro style repairs, and you get RWD and a near 50/50 weight distribution with a low COG.

Ch eaper to maintain and insure. Insurance got significantly more expensive up here, and it already was expensive. 2 wd will also be cheaper to maintain than awd. Plus I’m generally in favour of older/simpler vehicles. I don’t love the idea of going back to a 4 speed auto though, the 5 speed auto in the V70 is pretty good. I also might just try to find a 2wd V70. Or fully accept expensive maintenance and get an XC70.

I’d assume aesthetics (it’s a good brick!). They are pretty similar underneath.

I am heavily leaning towards a 240 wagon. I’d have one already, but it’s hard to find the right one for me. I don’t really want an auto one, but I don’t like the way the clutch feels in later 240s. Pre-86 I like the feel of better, but I’m not even sure when I last saw a pre-86 manual 245 for sale. Also no cruise control which sucks for road trips. Unfortunately my foot cramps up somewhat quickly on highway trips without cruise control. All that said, I want a 240 wagon.

I think they all have a cable clutch and I’ve had a 91 and an 82 and both clutches have felt the same outside of the 91 being worn. Maybe there was an issue with the one(s) you drove?
I have a 244 but it’s the GL with cruise and it’s an 82. Not sure about a 4 speed wagon that old though. Also not sure if I could trust the weird vacuum controlled cruise control but that’s just me.

I think it’s the clutch itself that’s different. Pre 86 and post 86 have different part numbers. But yeah it’s possible that the two newer ones I drove had pretty worn clutches. I drove a 79 and the clutch felt quite good, and the 92 and 91 I think both felt super vague, it was quite hard to find the bite point. Especially disappointing since I quite like the shifter feel

Neat, I had no idea. I’m sure it would make a difference in feel the different parts. Don’t even get me started on the shifter feel, it’s fantastic (not Honda slick, but you feel everything).
If you do get another manual 4 speed one you can grab a new rubber shift knob from Volvo (mine was like 17$ from the dealer) and it makes the shifter feel loads better. It just presses on after you remove the OD button. Tons of weird little parts are still available from the dealer (like the rubber doughnut that seals the wiper motor hole) for not awful prices (at least in Canada)

I’ ve put some S/V70 parts in my 850, so I’ve crawled on a few in the junkyards and if I had my druthers I’d prefer a 70 , they just seem a lot nicer. And you touched on one of the things I hate - the 4 spd auto in the 850 really kills it for me.
But your reasons are all solid, especially if its a big jump in insurance prices. Personally, the 850 was just a project/spare car. I'm p lanning to finish the last few little things it needs, drive it for a few weeks while I fix some issues on my Cruze, then sell it and use the proceeds to buy a 240 w agon.

I got a good deal on a 99 V70XC, 5 years ago, It replaced a 91 745 Turbo, the 91 was a winter riot, with a G80 and 3.73s. The XC went from 144K to 236K with only outer tie rod ends, a rad, and front brakes. Awesome winter car. It was just replaced with an 01 V70T5. My commute is only 7 miles to work, and while I miss the 7, and the P80 awd, I love the T5. Good luck, have fun.

I concur, 850 is a good brick. And the early S/V70s were just reskins, but each year they changed a few things. Still, I prefer the 70s because of the nicer interior and the 5 speed auto is much nicer than the 4 speed.

Front sway bar links go the quickest on these. Consider replacing if they haven’t been. The power steering lines also love to leak. Inspect and monitor reservoir occasionally. And, of course, these engines do burn some oil so be prepared.

Oh I had it inspected when I bought it and the only suspension items my mechanic mentioned were front control arms and rear sway bar links, everything else is within spec apparently. I lucked out with this motor as well. 200k kms on it and zero play in the turbo, and if it burns oil it isn’t enough to notice between changes.

I can't imagine downgrading from a turboed V70 to a 240 with less than half the power. The two cars are not really in the same universe.

All of these engines will burn oil rather quick (at varying rates of quick): When i t’s faster it’s because usually the PCV system or turbo drain line seals are neglected (or eventually turbo rebuild). I’m telling you most mechanics aren’t familiar with these cars and the specific design issues so, unless your mechanic is a Volvo specialist, be prepared to tackle the turbo drain line seal and clean/replace the PCV system at that mileage regardless (vacuum lines also go quicker than others for some reason and were shot on mine by 100k miles).
Just check the oil every few hundred miles an d keep some in the car. Be prepared. I have an ‘05 V70 2.5T with 140k miles and the oil consumption will eventually get dangerously quick and you won’t know it unless it is monitored . A love-hate relationship for decisions Volvo made (some Ford related, though).

He is a Volvo specialist, he also has either 2 or 3 P2s at the moment. A couple XC70s and a V70 I think. He mentioned being pleasantly surprised that the turbo drain wasn’t leaking, and I checked the PCV system when I bought the car and he confirmed it’s fine. I checked the oil a few times over the last 5k kms and it hasn’t burned enough to see on the dipstick. But he did say this one is unusually healthy for the miles
